The scientifically accepted recommended daily intake is eight 8 ounce glasses per day. Now this is a general rule and each person is different, but it is a good starting point for the 8 x 8 rule. Eight, 8 ounce glasses are equal to half a gallon or 1.9 liters. Food can account for 20% of your total fluid intake, so if you consume 2 liters of water per day plus eat a normal diet, you will typically replace the lost fluids.

TheĀ Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 3 liters (about 13, eight ounce cups) of total beverages a day and that women consume 2.2 liters (about 9, 12 ounce cups) of total beverages per day. You should consult your doctor or a dietician if you are concerned about how much water you should consume.
